In the theater experiment yoUturn, Christiane Mudra deals with the phenomenon of personal surveillance from different perspectives and makes the mechanisms of fear and paranoia tangible for the participants* in performative tours through urban space in a 1:1 situation.
yoUturn illuminates different aspects of surveillance - starting from human rights violations by the Stasi to human rights violating spyware exports by German manufacturers to despotic states to cases of years of unjustified surveillance by the The German Domestic Intelligence Services (Verfassungsschutz) and Edward Snowden's revelations about worldwide mass surveillance by the US intelligence agency NSA and its close cooperation with the BND.
For the new production in Fortaleza, Brazil (2017) Christiane Mudra investigated the Brazilian military dictatorship and the cooperation of German companies like VW as well as the surveillance of activists* in Brazil today.
YoUturn was preceded by more than a year of research in 2012/13, during which affected persons from various countries and political contexts such as the GDR, the Middle East, the FRG, and the USA were interviewed and the methodology of various secret services was analyzed. The material is supplemented by current findings on the surveillance practices of the NSA and BND. Based on these interviews, different tours through the city space were designed.
The tour follows the principle of a scavenger hunt. Each participant moves alone through the city and finds text fragments, objects and background information on the personal stories of the interview partners on the basis of written and acoustic clues.
But little by little, the real private sphere of the participants also becomes part of a power setting with an uncertain outcome.
After the Munich premiere in 2013 and the new versions in Potsdam and Berlin in 2014, the piece was shown again in Berlin in 2015 due to great demand.
In 2017 the new production followed in Fortaleza, Brazil in cooperation with the actors of Teatro Màquina and the collective Aparecidos Polìticos in cooperation with the Goethe Institut.
The Brazilian version was broadcast as a 360° live stream with over 3000 live views for the German audience.
